Finance may not always be the name of the game, but it is generally the score of the game. While numbers tell that score, they don’t always tell the story. A worthy business will have a raison d’etre that sits above its figures. We help make the important linkage between story and score for the benefit of SME clients and stakeholders, when helping them plan their futures. Challenging times demand a forward-looking and comprehensive grip of financial information, allied to a clear understanding of the objectives that the business is there to fulfil. Clarity of objective, in turn, demands decisive financial direction to serve that quest, without usurping it. I am a fellow of the ICAEW and a member of the Institute of Directors and occasional speaker on SME financial & business planning and related strategic topics. Having trained as a chartered accountant in London with Thomson McLintock (now KPMG), I left professional practice in 1982 to focus on SMEs at the sharp end.Across a variety of sectors, I have taken on roles as diverse as FD, MD, NED and business consultant. Finance has typically been central to most projects often in circumstances of business complexity, rapid growth, management change or stretched funding. |
After serving as a ‘hands-on’ investment director (1990-1993) for a niche private equity firm, during an earlier period of great economic uncertainty, I opted to test my experiences and methods more widely, and founded Lothian Associates. Lessons learned in all past engagements are even more relevant to the challenges of the post-credit-crunch period than could have been envisaged back in 1993. This updated site aims to tell the story of our offering. Please get in touch if you feel we can help your business.
